Small capacity lathes and milling machines

Emco Education Ltd are the UK agent for all Emco PC controlled small CNC machines. The Concept Turn 55 and Concept Mill 55 are accurate small CNC machines ideally suited for light prototype and small batch work. These machines are provided with your choice of modern control software or direct control from CAD/CAM.

Old model CNC machines
Many model engineers and one man businesses are now acquiring ex-education CNC machines, mainly Emco Compact 5 CNC lathes and Emco F1 CNC milling machines. The majority of these machines were originally supplied in the1980's to Schools and Further Education Colleges. Now education is upgrading to modern CNC machines the old models are becoming available on the secondhand market at prices the home user can afford!

The technology of the older machines has long been overtaken by the succeeding PC Turn and PC Mill range, but the Compact 5 CNC lathe and F1 CNC milling machine are still very competent machines. Compared to the new models, a Compact 5CNC or F1 CNC is somewhat "long winded" to program but is still a very usable reliable machine.

If you already have, or are considering purchasing, a Compact 5 CNC or F1 CNC  you will be pleased to know the majority of spare parts and accessories are still available from Emco.

The Compact 5 CNC was introduced in 1981as the first desktop CNC lathe for technical training, the F1 CNC mill followed soon after. These machines were subject to several revisions until being discontinued in 1992.

Before contacting Emco for replacement parts it is worth establishing which generation your Compact 5 CNC is:

1st Generation
The earliest version can be identified by counting the number of "G" codes listed on the control panel. if there are only 12 "G" codes you have a Mk 1.

This machine has incremental programming only and is the least desirable Compact 5 CNC nowadays.

2nd Generation
The second generation Compact 5 CNC was provided with extra "G" codes including G 91 and G 92 to allow absolute and incremental programming, the ability to fit an automatic tool turret and RS232 comms. Main CPU board part number A6C114003. This is a much more usable machine.

The third generation [sometimes called Mk4 in the UK ] is easily identified by the additional "G" codes and also "M" codes listed on the control panel. This machine also has partial arc programming, depth of cut parameter in the roughing cycle and several other improvements. Main CPU board part number A6C114004. Many earlier machines have been updated through the years to this version. This is the Compact 5 CNC of choice.
